Manchester United Football Club have had a slow start to the summer transfer period, after seemingly pushing hard to sign Antoine Griezmann – a move that eventually failed. Although Jose Mourinho’s team finished the season with two major pieces of silverware (along with the Community Shield), their Premier League form was pretty poor, as the Red Devils finished in sixth place.
It became evident that despite spending millions last summer, United’s squad isn’t anywhere close to the finished article. I fully expect Mourinho to spend big again this summer as he continues to mould the squad into one that fits his style of play. So let’s take a look at four potential areas he could look at strengthening in.
MatteoDarmian had a cracking game at left-back in the Europa League final, but that isn’t his natural position and we’ve seen a fair share of poor games from the Italian out there. Luke Shaw seems constantly injured although he is brilliantly talented, and you just get the impression that we could well invest in that area of the pitch.
Danny Rose is a player that intrigues me as he is Premier League ready. I’d also like to see Benjamin Mendy come to Old Trafford but it looks as though a deal to Manchester City is already pretty close according to reports and bookies reckon the Citizens are the favorites for the signature of the Frenchman. But you never know, the deal can be hijacked. Defensively, Manchester United were pretty solid for the most part. It looks as though we have an absolute gem of our hands in the form of Eric Bailly, who has been sensational this year. The aforementioned Ivorian formed a brilliant partnership with Marcos Rojo before the Argentine picked up a ligament injury, which leaves us short in numbers.
Sky Sources linked Mourinho with a move to bring in Raphael Varane; and what an acquisition that would be. Another name mentioned has been former red, Michael Keane. Honestly, I wouldn’t be against the idea of buying both of these guys and getting shot of Chris Smalling and Phil Jones.
Although both Ander Herrera and Paul Pogba have had excellent seasons, there are definitely questions to be raised in terms of us having a holding midfielder. Michael Carrick does a brilliant job when he plays, but he simply cannot take to the field in every game, so I expect United to move for a top class defensive type of player who can break up opposing attacks.
I guess the most clearest rumours seem to be linking us with a move for AS Monaco’s Fabinho – and he is a brilliant footballer who is versatile, too. Not only can he play in the middle of the park, he could also help out at right-back if the situation arises where Antonio Valencia is missing.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic is injured, and we’re still unsure as to whether the 35-year-old will put pen to paper on a contract extension at the Theatre of Dreams. One thing we do know though, is that he probably won’t take to the field before 2018 now, and Marcus Rashford needs help.
In my opinion, our top priority should be Romelu Lukaku. The Belgian forward should be available for purchase, but he will not come cheap. The proof is in the pudding, though, and over his last four seasons in the English game, he has scored over 100 goals which is mightily impressive for a man who is only 24.
