Manchester United have secured a pre-contract agreement with Benfica defender Victor Lindelof who will arrive at Old Trafford this summer, according to Italian outlet Tuttomercatoweb.com.
The Swede was heavily linked with a move to Jose Mourinho’s men in January but a deal failed to appear with Lindelof remaining with the Portuguese side.
However, the Red Devils have reportedly retained their interest and he will now make the switch to Old Trafford after his current campaign has finished.
Mourinho’s men have beaten off competition from Roma for the defender’s signature. The Serie A outfit had been hoping to land Lindelof as a potential replacement for Kostas Manolas who is expected to leave in the summer.
The Red Devils have struggled to find a settled centre-back pairing this season largely due to injuries with Chris Smalling, Phil Jones, Marcos Rojo and Eric Bailly all having missed chunks of the season.
Summer signing Bailly, who has impressed after moving from Villarreal, has also seen his season disrupted by international duty at the Africa Cup of Nations.
The Ivorian is now back at the club and looks set to re-establish himself as the club’s first choice defender alongside either Smalling, Jones or Rojo.
The defensive trio have all been linked with moves away from the club recently and it would be little surprise to see any of them move on in the summer.
While Jones and Rojo have impressed this season after difficult spells with the club they are yet to wholly convince and the arrival of Lindelof will only reduce their game time further.
Smalling is another player who has been linked with other clubs while United also have youngsters such as the highly-rated Axel Tuanzebe pushing for a place in the squad.
Lindelof, meanwhile, has enjoyed an impressive season with Benfica, the team are currently top of the table in Portugal, a point ahead of Porto.
The centre-back was also part of the team that beat Borussia Dortmund 1-0 in the first leg of the Champions League last 16 clash on Tuesday night, helping to keep a clean sheet against Thomas Tuchel’s side.
